Hot Trend for 2019: Consumers Hungry for High Protein and Low Sugar Foods
Los Angeles, October 2018. The upcoming International Baking Industry Expo is expected to showcase three key consumer trends for 2019, writes Baking Business.
In 2019, consumers are expected to be continuing to scour the shelves for:
- High Protein
- More Plant Based Proteins
- Low Sugar
High Protein: Indeed, Health Focus International data shows that 76 percent of consumers are interested in eating more protein, and 76 percent of consumers want more fiber in their diets.
More Plant Based Proteins: 73 percent of shoppers view plant proteins as healthy, according to the International Food Information Council Foundation’s Annual Food and Health Survey. In particular, pea protein and hemp protein are gaining recognition and traction with health-conscious consumers.
Lower Sugar: Health Focus International has found that 40 percent of shoppers are actively decreasing their sugar intake. Research from the International Food Information Council showed that U.S. shoppers’ opinion of sugar continues to deteriorate. Thirty-two per cent had a more negative opinion of sugars in 2017 as compared to 2016. Most damningly of all, 91 percent of consumers who read nutrition fact labels said they were trying to avoid or limit sugars.
